Puget Sound is a prime destination for divers of all levels of experience to explore a diversity of sea life and marine environments. One of Puget Sound’s major attractions is the giant Pacific octopus, the largest of the octopus species weighing in at up to 150 pounds with an arm span up to 20 feet. These fascinating creatures can voluntarily change color to express emotion, comfort, and intention and change texture to mimic their surroundings.
Several popular dive sites in Puget Sound are Octopus Protection Areas, offering additional protection for the species. Recreational harvest of octopus is prohibited in the areas listed below by WAC 220-330-090, giving divers a prime opportunity to see these magnificent animals.
